Born in McCammon, Idaho to Leonard and Rosemond Henson on October 25, 1933. He passed away peacefully at his home in Fernley, Nevada with family members Oct. 13, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Shirley Jefferies, brother Robert Henson, granddaughter Paige and great grandsons Hazen and Luke. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Thelma, daughter Sherie Burke (Mike), sons Larry (Jackie), Brent (Tonya), Steven (Darla) and Brian (Desiree), 16 grand children and 16 great grand children.
On July 28, 1957 he married Thelma Whitworth in Tonopah Nevada. The marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple. A life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints he was active in many callings but his favorite was teaching the Primary Children. Dick graduated from Pocatello High school in 1951 and enlisted in the Navy. He served his tour of duty in the South Pacific. While in the Navy his ship conducted the A Bomb and H Bomb test in the Marshall Island. After leaving the service he enrolled in Idaho State University where he received a BA in Social Studies and PE. He was a member of the ISU intercollegiate Boxing team and won the Far West Championship as a freshmen in college. Always a cowboy at heart he organized the LSU Rodeo Team and competed in College Rodeo through out his schooling, winning many titles and Belt Buckles. In 1959 he won the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Bareback Title. He continued to rodeo for many years and in 1965 won the Idaho Cowboy Saddle Bronc and All-around Championships.
Teaching school and coaching basketball and football was his life's work and he loved it and his many students. He taught and coached in Shelley, Idaho- Ethete, Wyoming- Wells, Owyhee, Eureka and Fernley Nevada earning the title "Coach of the Year" 6 times. He taught school for 54 years. He retired at 80 years old to be with his family and horses at home in Fernley. You will be missed by family and friends.
